How the work happens

Adolescence is a time of enormous emotional and social change. As young people develop their own identity, relationships and independence, they can also meet challenges that feel confusing or overwhelming. Parents are often the first to notice: a young person becoming withdrawn, anxious or irritable, losing interest in things they once enjoyed, struggling with school or friendships, or changing in their sleep and routines. Sometimes it follows a clear event; sometimes it emerges gradually, and it's hard to say what changed or why.

We're interested in more than the changes on the surface. By exploring how a young person is making sense of their world, therapy can help uncover what's contributing to the difficulties beneath it. Every young person is different, and the work is tailored accordingly — some value a space to talk openly, others find it easier to express themselves through creative work, imagery or sand tray. We adapt, creating a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space.

Therapy isn't about telling a young person who they are or what to do. It's about helping them understand themselves more deeply, strengthen their resilience, and build healthier relationships — with themselves and with others.

Whether this is your first experience of therapy or you've seen someone before, you're welcome here. We'd like to get to know you — not just the difficulties you've been having, but you as a person.

Sometimes life gets hard to make sense of, and you might find yourself feeling or reacting in ways that don't fit who you are or how you'd like things to be. Together we'll take time to understand what's been going on, and what it might mean for you. Often, as you come to understand yourself better, the things that brought you here start to lose their grip.

There's no right or wrong way to do therapy. Some people like to talk; others find it easier through creativity, imagery or sand tray. We'll work in whatever way feels right for you, at a pace that feels manageable.

What you talk about is private. You need somewhere you can be yourself and speak openly, without worrying it'll all be passed on to your parents. From time to time we'll meet with them to think about how best to support you — but we'll always talk with you first about what you're happy for us to share and what you'd rather keep between us. The only exception is if we're worried that you, or someone else, isn't safe. If that happened, we'd explain why, and involve you in it wherever we can.

What to expect

1. A conversation

A 50-minute consultation with you, without your child present, so you can tell us what you're seeing and what's worrying you. One of our team will be in touch within two working days of your booking to arrange it.

2. Meeting your child, in person

A 50-minute first session in our therapy room, with you present at the start. It’s normal for your child to feel unsure and there’s no expectation they engage immediately. You may join their play or activity. After 15–20 minutes, the therapist will ask if your child is comfortable for you to wait outside; if not, staying is fine. We never pressure a child to separate before they’re ready.

3. Regular weekly sessions

Same time each week, in person, 50 minutes, in a room set up for this work. Therapy is ongoing and reviewed regularly.

4. Six-weekly reviews

A meeting to talk about how the work is going and what would help at home — included in the session fee, in person or over Zoom.
